ProvenancePossibly Alexandre Pau de Saint Martin (b. 1751 - d. 1820), Paris; October 2, 1820, possibly in the posthumous Pau de Saint Martin sale, Hotel Bullion, Paris, lot 60 [see note 1]. Private collection, France [see note 2]. 1969, Dennis Vanderkar Gallery, London. Private collection, England [see note 3]. December 10, 1991, anonymous ("Property of a Lady") sale, Phillips, London, lot 77, to Johnny Van Haeften Ltd., London; March 1992, sold by Johnny Van Haeften to Susan and Matthew Weatherbie, Boston.
NOTES:
[1] This lot by Wouwerman was described as a cavalier on a white horse escorted by a peasant woman and child who are stopped near a donkey carrying vegetables, with another woman and child at the left, the composition set against a cloudy sky. For many years, the present painting was known through an engraving by Charles Nicolas Varin (1741 - 1812) and published without ownership or location information; see John Smith, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of the Most Eminent Dutch, Flemish, and French Painters, part 1 (London, 1829), cat. no. 434.
[2] Included in "Dutch and Flemish Old Masters" (Dennis Vanderkar Gallery, London April 1 – May 31, 1969), cat. no. 30, where it was said to come from a French private collection.
[3] According to information provided by Johnny Van Haeften at the time of the painting's sale.
